LEAVITT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- West Michigan authorities say a helicopter with two men aboard crashed in a remote and hard-to-reach federal wetlands, killing the pilot and injuring his passenger.
The Oceana County sheriff's department says the crash happened Saturday in Leavitt Township, near Walkerville and about 55 miles north-northwest of Grand Rapids.
The department says 49-year-old Thomas Slocum was flying his helicopter over a wetlands area called Tanner's Swamp when it crashed.
Undersheriff Tim Priese says 28-year-old passenger Matt Williams of Hart was able to call 911, giving authorities the location of the crash.
Priese says rescuers found the crash site about 4:15 p.m. but needed to hand carry Williams about 1,000 feet to where an all-terrain vehicle could carry him.
He was airlifted to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids with serious injuries.
