LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- State wildlife officials say there are still plenty of good places in Michigan to hunt for pheasant.

Pheasant season opens Thursday in portions of the Upper Peninsula and later this fall in other sections of the state. The bag limit is two males daily, with four in possession. A small game license is required.

Game bird specialist Al Stewart of the Department of Natural Resources says pheasant populations have been in decline for a number of years, but they can be found in southern Michigan and some U.P. counties.

Stewart says hunters should look for warm-season grasses, especially idle farm fields. Cattail and shrub lands near farmlands are good for late-season hunting.

A DNR program called the Pheasant Restoration Initiative is designed to boost their numbers by improving habitat.
