No End In Sight For Clean Up After Train Wreck
Decisions are still being made on what to do with damaged train cars and how to handle spilled diesel fuel at the site of the accident in Leoni Township.

Amtrak is still in the process of assessing the damage on the train cars. If they decide they are in good enough shape, they will put them back on the tracks for a trip to either Chicago or Indianapolis, depending on the type of repairs each will need. While those decisions are in the works, all clean up efforts have turned to the estimated 12,000 gallons of diesel that spilled on the side of the tracks after the collision of the Chicago-bound train and semitrailer.
When the train slid from the tracks, a rail twisted and punctured a softball sized hole in the side of a fuel tank. Railroad ties have been torn out where some of the fuel fell, but the majority ended up on the side of the tracks; an area now covered with a large tarp. State Department of Environmental Quality Supervisor Mitch Adelman says the spill could have been much worse: "Luckily the location of the spill wasn't immediately over a bridge or river or stream. No storm sewers or sanitary sewers in close proximity to it."
More land will be excavated than officials believe was contaminated, as an extra precaution. Even though the fuel hasn't spread to an area risking public health yet, the ground absorbs and spreads it quick, and workers are careful for it not to become a problem. "The sooner you begin working on the cleanup, the shorter duration you have to spend overall," described Adelman.
Servicemen will continue to monitor the area for at least several more days. As for the tracks themselves, trains are back to using the tracks as usual, only at a slower pace in the area of the accident.
