The robbery that spurred a multiple-vehicle crash on MLK in Lansing has people living nearby calling for change. It happened at at apartment complex on the 3200 block of Washington Avenue.

Residents say the troubles there are spilling out into surrounding neighborhoods and they no longer feel safe.

According to Lansing Police, the South Washington Park Apartment complex is an enforcement priority. Officers are called there often and say crime is a real problem there.

Police have seen issues ranging from attempted murder, in connection with Monday's robbery, to drug offenses.

Neighbors are calling the complex a cancer, an epicenter of crime.

"They need to address who is coming in, who are the tenants, what are their backgrounds, what is going on," concerned homeowner Ron Leix, with the Old Everett Neighborhood Association said.

In the past year, the property has seen gun shots, robberies and drug problems.

With a seven-month-old son to worry about, Leix wants a solution.

"I just don't want him exposed to this, I mean we drive him around, we take him for walks," Leix added.

The police department says the city-run complex is on its radar. At one time an assisted living facility, the South Washington Park Apartment complex is now affordable housing. It is also a frequent stop for police.

"Like district officers who get out of their car and actually go into the building and go through the floors," Public Information Officer Robert Merritt, with Lansing Police said. "I know for a fact that when we do get called they are quick in response."

Police have met with the Lansing Housing Commission and representatives from the Attorney General's Office to talk about the crime. The agencies say they're reviewing screenign proceedures, evictions policies and considering added lighting and on-site security.

"The police department is engaged and they're being very proactive," Merritt said. But residents and officers do find Monday's robbery and crash frustrating.

"It's tough for a department to go one step forward and two steps back," Merritt explained. Still, police are confident the added focus at the complex will cause change, however slowly.

While Leix and other concerned residents are upset with the crime at the South Washington Apartments, they are quick to point out that they also have great, law-abiding neighbors in the complex. They want those people and the entire neighborhood to be secure again.

Police say the three suspects involved in Monday's crash and robbery will be arraigned Wednesday morning.
