GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Two women driving in Grand Rapids saw a mother in distress and knew they had to help.
It didn't matter that the mother was a duck, whose ducklings had disappeared.
Mlive.com reports (http://bit.ly/L4v1sS ) that Tina Miller and Jean Darnell saw the mother duck pacing Saturday near a storm grate in the median. They figured her ducklings had dropped down the grate.
Their assumption proved correct after a couple hours of searching down two manholes and using a scoop made from a metal gutter cleaner, plastic cup and hair tie. They rescued five ducklings with the help of a city sewer worker and Kent County sheriff's deputy.
Darnell says she's a mother, and "you have to save your children."
