Michigan Charter Schools Grow, But At Modest Pace

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A new state law would allow Michigan charter schools to expand at a much faster rate starting this fall.
But early indications are the number of schools won't explode in the 2012-13 academic year, mostly because of an authorization process that takes two years to navigate.
Michigan has about 255 charter schools or public school academies operating this academic year. It appears that number could grow by 20 or fewer next school year.
Michigan has had charter schools since the mid-1990s, and now roughly 7 percent of the state's 1.55 million public school students attend one. Charter school enrollment has grown about 16 percent in the past five years while overall public school enrollment has declined in Michigan.
