Michigan GOP Consider Concealed Firearms for Teachers

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Some Republican lawmakers are reintroducing measures to allow guns in Michigan schools.

Kewadin Republican Rep. Greg MacMaster introduced a bill last month to let local school officials allow teachers, administrators or employees carry a concealed pistol in the school. MacMaster says school officials would be required to create a policy for training and rules for storing the firearm.

Speaker Jase Bolger has questioned whether making schools gun-free zones has done more harm than good. But Bolger says it is not the time to push for gun legislation and is urging lawmakers to "take a breath."

Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a bill at the end of last year that would have allowed concealed firearms in schools, churches and daycare centers.

I must agree with Representative MacMaster; our schools house the single largest concentrations of children anywhere and those children are unprotected BY LAW. A good first step would be for the State to enforce college and university students’ and employees’ right to be armed on campus. Often my initial response to news of shootings in the Lansing area is to worry about my friends who are educators at Lansing Community College. They park in or walk through those very neighborhoods where the murders have occurred. Additionally they often mention the violence and assaults on students on the campus itself or in the parking structure. The State has determined they may be armed, the College’s policy denied them that right under penalty of expulsion or termination. When we think about protecting our future, perhaps we should begin by thinking about protecting those very children and young people who ARE our future.
