Mich. Road Debate Light on How Money Divvied Up

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The drive to fix Michigan's roads is centered on winning support from lawmakers for at least $1.2 billion a year in additional taxes and fees.

But hardly any attention is being paid to how that cash should be divvied up.

Gov. Rick Snyder wants the bulk of new revenue to go to a new fund that would pass along additional dollars to road agencies. Yet few specifics about how the money would be distributed have been released since his budget was unveiled two months ago.

That's mainly because Snyder is first trying to persuade a skeptical GOP-led Legislature to swallow an increase in the state gasoline tax from 19 cents to 33 cents a gallon and a hike in car license plate fees by 60 percent.

The State currently collects over 2 billion a year from the gas tax, but only spends half of it on roads. More than 1 billion goes to other departments such as, DNR and Education. I see no difference between Snyder and Grandholm. Both are incompetent!?!?!?

Unless the road builders learn how to build roads that will last more than a year, we are wasting our money. Why are we spending money on things like new light poles at the I-96 Holt exit when we have crumbling roads. I am sick of make work projects just to spend the federal dollars. Irresponsible spending by M-DOT put our roads in the shape they are.

Governor Snyder needs to pull this money out of someone else's pockets! Like take back those tax breaks for the wealthiest. 86% is too excessive when they have NOT added any jobs in Michigan (other than auto industry) I am taxed too much and cannot even afford my bills. With auto insurance for PL/PD at $200 a month, $1k does not go far!

If the money is coming from a gas tax then the $'s need to go to roads......They are almost beyond repair as it is !
