Police got the call around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
"When the officers arrived they found a white male subject with an arrow in his chest and a crossbow laying nearby the body," Howell police chief, George Basar, said.
The victim is Chris Martin Allen, a resident of the Wellston area of Northern Michigan. Police believe Allen had been living with relatives in the apartment complex off M-59 in Howell since the holidays.
"The arrow was in his left chest," Chief Basar said.
Chief Basar says the death is still under investigation, but police have not ruled out the possibility that this was a suicide.
"It's physically possible," Chief Basar added. "We have discussed that and it's physically possible."
Police are treating this incident as a homicide until further information is discovered, but homicide or not, it's shaken the neighbors in the apartment complex.
"I never thought I would have seen a crime scene here," Larry Varga said. "It's a fantastic area and a nice place to live. Nothing ever happens around here."
One other resident says she's been in the complex for four years and she's never felt unsafe walking her dog late at night.
Police have been to the apartment complex before, but it has never been for anything like this.
"Police patrol this area very often" added Varga. "I have never seen any problems here except very tiny things like people having a party."
The lack of crime at the complex has neighbors and police shaking their heads about this death.
"I've been in the business for 37 years and this is the first one that I've had," Chief Basar said.
