One woman living in Jackson claims the furniture she rented from Rent-A-Center came infested with bugs.

One of the suspected bed bugs the woman saved in a plastic bag following the incident.

Imagine renting a new set of furniture for your home only to find when it was delivered it was infested with bugs.

One woman in Jackson is claiming just that and now said she's considering suing the company.

The woman, who asked that her identity be withheld, said the problem started after she rented furniture for her living room from the Rent-A-Center store on Argyle Road in Jackson.

And while the furniture has since been taken away, the bites, itching and frustrations remain.

The woman said she rented the furniture on July 8 and it only took two days before she realized she had a problem.

"By then I had already caught bed bugs in bags and things all over the house," she said. "I lifted them from shoes and socks, off the floor."

She said she started noticing bites on her and her son's skin and after closer examination of the couches she rented, realized they were infested with what she suspects are bed bugs.

"We have to sleep on an air mattress because we didn't know that the furniture was infested for the two days that we had it," she said.

She said when she called Rent-A-Center's customer care line they referred her to another line specifically for dealing with bed bug complaints.

A spokesperson for Rent-A-Center said the company doesn't have a bed bug issue and the bed bug hotline was meant to serve as a preventive measure.

Rent-A-Center said they routinely check their stores and inspect all furniture before it's delivered and when it's returned.

In the meantime, the Jackson woman's case has been sent on to Rent-A-Center's third party insurance claim company which is waiting on the report from the extermination company to determine where exactly the bugs originated from.

Joy Yearout with the Michigan Attorney General's office said those who find themselves in similar situations can file a complaint with the state.
