Jackson Area Soldiers Returning Home

Following a nine-month tour of duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, more than 130 Michigan Army National Guard Soldiers from the Jackson-based 1461st Transportation Company return home.

The homecoming ceremony is scheduled to begin promptly at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 30 at Lumen Christi Catholic High School, 3483 Spring Arbor Road in Summit Township, Mich.

While mobilized to Afghanistan, the 1461st Soldiers supported more than 100 combat logistical support missions while navigating 120,000 miles throughout Afghanistan. The unit was one of the only units in Afghanistan to provide transportation and convoy security throughout three regional areas and was awarded the Army's Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal for their deployment successes.

Additionally, 15 soldiers were awarded the Bronze Star, four received the Purple Heart and eight soldiers received the Combat Action Badge. The unit was under the command of Capt. Melody Taylor.
