UPDATE: Holt Man Charged with 3 Sex Crimes Against Children

MASON - A Holt man was charged Thursday with three counts of criminal sexual conduct involving children after his arrest yesterday.

Lawrence Frederick Gibbs, 57, was charged with one count first degree criminal sexual conduct against a 7-year-old and two counts of second degree sexual conduct against a 13- and 14-year-old. All the victims were young males.

Gibbs, who lives at 5681 McCue Road in Holt, is considered a habitual offender. In 2001 he was convicted of fourth degree criminal sexual assault against a young boy in Missaukee County, and received 90 days on a tether and two years probation.

The charges are worse in Ingham County, and he faces a much harsher sentence if convicted: life in prison.

"On one hand, you're pleased that our investigators have got the talent to get these people off the street," said Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth. "On the other side of the coin, it's sad that we have to worry about our kids encountering these type of people."

How Gibbs encountered his victims, police are not yet revealing.

"We're not going to release the minutia of this investigation," Sheriff Wriggelsworth said. "We received a complaint, and we're not going to get into the gory details."

Ingham County Police received that initial complaint in December 2011 from the two teenagers. They've been investigating ever since, which led them to the 7-year-old victim, and finally an arrest and search warrant Wednesday.

"The [Michigan State Police] internet task force went went with us on the search warrant, and they're going to do a forensic analysis on the computers to see anything that will take us in another direction," said Sheriff Wriggelsworth.

The police said Gibbs is not only a registered sex offender, but also a registered federal firearms dealer. He had so many guns in his home, police lost count in just one room.

"It has many, many guns. I'm not exaggerating, many guns in that house," Sheriff Wriggelsworth said. "So we wanted to make sure in terms of safety to the officers, and safety to the neighborhood, that we got him away from there."

Police blocked off McCue Road, waitied for Gibbs to leave his home, and arrested him in a routine traffic stop.

Gibbs' primary address is also listed as Best Heating and Cooling, the business he owns. Police say they have no idea if Gibbs actually does any work of that kind around town.

Gibbs is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.

"I'm not aware of any investigation involving neighborhood kids, but this investigation isn't over either," Sheriff Wriggelsworth said. "So there could be more developments as it bumps down the road."

Gibbs' preliminary exam is scheduled for June 12.

How dare you-you sick, deranged fool, how DARE you accuse his family of being guilty of ANYTHING! There was NO PROOF of what he supposedly did to ANYONE, which is why he was NOT put away the first times. Without proof, why would his family think of him as guilty? They know that man-YOU do not so don't you DARE ever accuse his family of being guilty in this ever again. They are GOOD PEOPLE who just want to live their lives in peace. If there was any proof of his being guilty I KNOW they wouldn't fight anymore but until there is you watch your mouth!

He has been convicted before. He is on the sex offender registery. He settled out of court for another accusation. He hired only teen boys. He spent all day with teen boys. He had them doing manual labor in and around his home and property. He flaunted his knowledge and collection of weapons to these teen boys. His family is guilty for letting that happen. He is sick. He has a problem. The people that are truely guilty is his family for seeing the things going on and not doing anything. They knew of his past behavior and decided to let him continue with it. His family should have done something to stop this long ago.

The most perturbing thing I find in your comments is the complete lack of remorse. It is truely abhorrent.

How can any of you think it's right that his address was released? He's not there, now it's just his family. Now they're harassed by media and nosy individuals alike. And as if his owning guns was relevant; you couldn't find a safer or more responsible place to store firearms. As for any lingering doubts that his business was legit? You can see the comments here about previous customers who had no problem with him, even without my saying it was a genuine business for what it says it was, not a lure. You all think you always get the right story from the media? It's not exactly a secret that they'll say anything to get viewers-its their line of work. Thank you to those of you who are simply seeking justice and the truth by innocent until proven guilty, and due process: to the rest of you, you're nothing more than a pack of sick vultures-picking over the remains of a family in pain and gobbling up whatever the media will feed you without knowing anything of the truth. How dare you. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

I totally disagree with the comment below that this guy is innocent until proven guilty. he was already convicted once and is guilty as sin. There shouldn't be any 2nd chances for child molesters because you can't reform them. WILX and the reporter did a good thing for the community with this story.

This man is a REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER! His address is public information, as it should be. Do you not have children you want to keep safe? If he weren't a registered sex offender I could see why releasing his address is a problem, but he IS.

"Irresponsible"? "...atrocious faces..."? It would have been irresponsible of WILX NOT to warn the public of this repeat predator!!!! And what is Kantner supposed to do while reporting on someone who rapes little boys? Smile? Grin? Giggle? Her face was serious because the subject was deadly serious.

Thank goodness for Shannon Kantner's comprehensive report on this case. She and WILX may very well have prevented a future tragedy. As to Gibbs being "innocent until proven guilty" as others have commented, he WAS proven guilty earlier. As a convicted, registered sex offender, his address is openly available to the public. Ms. Kantner revealed nothing improper by mentioning his address on air.

How is it minutia to give the details (the sheriff) on how he lured the kids there? It important people know how a guy in the sticks gets kids over to molest so others can prevent it.

Criminal sexual conduct is a heinous crime and I commend the law enforcement officials who made this arrest. However, I have concerns with the common media practice of reporting on arrests as if the accused have already been proven guilty. What ever happened to U.S. legal premise: "Innocent until proven guilty"? I do not know Mr. Gibbs but putting his picture and giving his home address on the broadcast this evening presumes guilt before he has had his right to due process. Although it may be rare that an accused person is ultimately shown to be innocent, there is no way to undo the damage done by this sort of journalism. The giving of Mr. Gibb's address on the 6:00 news is almost an invitation to retribution on his household, which may house completely innocent people. I am all for arresting, convicting and punishing the guilty, but lets make sure they are before we do.

That is the media for you. If they only printed news after the trial, we would not know about two hours live coverage of the white bronco chase or the dc sniper case.

He is a registered sex offender! If you look up his name in the MI Sex Offender Registry it will give you his address and his picture. This is public knowledge! Maybe you should look up the registry once is awhile and see who is lurking around your neighborhood!

How irresponsible can WILX be? You post an address to a house where a family lives?!? You disclose there are numerous firearms in a house which has nothing to do with this case? You report that the gentleman owns a business, but whether he actually does heating and cooling is questioned? Is this a retaliation for being removed from the premises, twice? How about some responsible reporting? The faces your news anchor was making were atrocious, and your lake of compassion for his family is deplorable. I will never again watch your station.

The fact that he has a bunch of firearms isnt irrelevant. Its shows other off kilter aspects of his personality. nobody needs a armory in there home and kids dont need to be around a home with guns everywhere just as much as anywhere near a pedophile.

@Rick...you are speaking about something you have no first hand knowledge of. There is absolutely nothing wrong with him having "numerous guns" in his home. He is a registered FFL holder for crying out loud. I am a firearms collector as well, does that make me "off kilter???" I happen to know Larry and NO ONE is more responsible with their firearms than he is. As for the charges pending against him, if he has indeed committed these crimes then he deserves to suffer the consequences. i think we all agree on that point.

The fact he has numerous firearms is certainly not irrelevant when he's holding them to the person he's raping's head.

IRRESPONSIBLE? What are you thinking? This man is mentally ILL! The fact that he has all the guns is a factor when it came to his arrest! If you were his neighbor wouldnt you want to know. And as far as his family...This sure is NOT the first go around with this kind of thing. But truth be known they have mostlikley left town the day he was arrested. For they have been through this before. Compassion..the only compassion here should be for all the boys he has molested over several years!

It is not irrelevant that this man has more firearms than a small army, this man knowing he is facing life in prison he may have used the guns on the public or the police. The public deserves to know the kind of man the owner of Best Heating an Cooling is. A child molester whom has more fire arms than a small army!
