BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) -- A group is seeking state support for its proposal to open a charter school in western Michigan aiming to meet the academic needs of elite athletes.

The Legacy Academy would serve students in grades seven through 12. An application with the state Department of Education lists two locations -- The Revolution Arena for hockey in Battle Creek and the Kingdom Indoor Soccer Center in Portage. The school targets hockey players, figure skaters and soccer players, who could train and take classes at the same location.

Spokeswoman Heather Montei says organizers are forming a nonprofit group to run the school and are seeking a charter from Northern Michigan University. They've applied for a $110,000 planning grant from the state.
