EAST LANSING (WILX)-- The next phase of the Grand River Avenue construction project in East Lansing starts next week. It may end up pushing even more traffic into the neighborhoods surrounding downtown.

Not only is that going to make life less convenient for people who live there; it has some of them worried about their kids' safety.

Living near the construction, Sarah Connolly says the traffic is getting worse.

"You see more traffic on the side-roads that you wouldn't normally see because of the construction on Grand River."

More people maybe using the side-streets but traffic is still moving faster than Grand River. According to Connolly those using the side-street maybe too fast.

"There are definitely more people driving faster than you would normally see. It's because they're not used to driving these roads."

For those living nearby, getting out of the area has become the biggest hassle.

"It makes it ridiculously long in the morning and afternoon during commute hours," said driver Julie Renner.

"No matter how much time you budget you have to budget more time because every route seems clogged up," said Katie Bielecki.

Bielecki lives near the construction. She says she feels safe, but she still takes extra precautions for her 2 year-old son when they go on walks.

"Safety is a big thing in our family. So we keep a close eye on him and keep him strapped in his stroller."

"I'll just be glad when it's over," said Connolly.

But it's only going to get worse. M-DOT says they will begin the next phase of construction on Sunday. It will close down East-bound Grand River Avenue in the downtown area. West-bound will be a two lane road, one for each direction.

The good news is the project is ahead of schedule. M-DOT expects to have it finished before the end of June. It was originally hoping to be done in time for the first MSU football game on August 30th.
