Governor Snyder Upset After No Decision on Medicaid Expansion

LANSING (WILX)-- Can Governor Rick Snyder force the state Senate to come back from vacation early to vote on the Medicaid expansion bill?

We asked him that question following an uncharacteristically emotional press conference Thursday.

The governor was seriously flustered about the Senate's decision to not bring up the bill to vote. One he says that will cost Michigan taxpayers two billion dollars with no return.

"The Senate has decided to leave. That's not a good answer," said Snyder.

He praised the House of Representatives for being able to come to an agreement, but is disappointed his own party is standing in the way of passing the bill.

"I'm asking every Michigander to walk up to them and tell them to take a vote, not a vacation."

The governor told WILX he wants to make the Senate come back, but it's probably impossible.

"Most likely I don't have the ability to force them to come back. But shouldn't they come back and do the right thing?"

The next Senate session is scheduled for July 3rd. Earlier than expected, but that doesn't mean that there's going to be a vote on Medicaid expansion. There's no immediate deadline for the bill, but the governor says Michigan doesn't have time to wait for the Senate's vacation to end.

"We need to move. Most likely in the next 30 days or so."

He says it'll be hard to show his face in a emergency room if it's not passed. Explaining that it would be tough knowing many families are there because they don't have the coverage go anywhere else.

"I can't imagine walking into an ER when we had an opportunity to solve that."

The state will need a waiver even if the Senate passes the bill, because the House added restrictions in it. The restrictions would require people to either buy their own insurance, or pay higher premiums after four years on Medicaid.
