Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder reported a gross income of about $1.9 million in 2011, when he says he gave back all but $1 of his state salary.

A federal income tax return reviewed by the Detroit Free Press says the Republican and former venture capitalist had capital gains income of just more than $1.3 million in 2011. He reported dividend income of more than $350,000, wages of $141,547, interest income of nearly $54,000 and real estate income of just more than $6,000.

Snyder paid federal income taxes of nearly $273,000 on taxable income of nearly $1.4 million. That's an effective tax rate of 19.8 percent.

Snyder reported giving just more than $196,000 to charity.

Snyder filed jointly with his wife, Sue Snyder, whose occupation was listed as a homemaker.

I must say Governor Snyder’s choice to accept a token payment does indeed make sense. While certainly not unprecedented, it is a good reminder to the public that a political office is really only temporary, part-time employment. When an individual leaves office, he or she is certainly not unemployed. Quite the opposite, most often they go back to their old job of being a lawyer, corporate head, farmer, what have you. We all know it takes a huge amount of money to become elected, and it does not all come from donations. My guess is, and yes it is just a guess, most of our politicians from the municipal level on up, start out fairly wealthy well before the donations. Any compensation for political office, including health and retirement benefits, could be eliminated without any detriment to the office holder. A token stipend is all that should be required; they already get to retain their title. Let’s let all of our legislators, executives, and justices follow suit! I wonder how much money the country would save?
