ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) -- A West Michigan girl whose face was mauled by a pet raccoon when she was a baby has had her final major surgery.
MLive.com and WOOD-TV report Saturday that the procedure on 10-year-old Charlotte Ponce was performed Friday at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, north of Detroit.
It was her fifth operation and involved shaping and contouring Charlotte's damaged nose. She is expected to be discharged from the hospital Saturday. Her surgeon plans to reconstruct Charlotte's right ear next summer.
The raccoon attacked the girl in 2002 in her crib while her biological parents lived near Ravenna, about 15 miles east of Muskegon. The raccoon was later destroyed.
She was adopted by her great-aunt and great-uncle in 2005 after Michigan terminated the biological parents' rights.
