General Motors is considering a significant plant expansion in Lansing. The $38 million facility could go on the land adjacent to the current Lansing Grand River assembly plant that was left vacant when the old assembly plant was demolished.

Mayor Virg Bernero says the possibility surfaced when the automaker approached the city about tax abatements for a new facility. Mayor Bernero says even with the tax incentive, the City of Lansing would benefits from $1.7 million in new taxes over 12 years, "as well as the overall economic impact of the construction and new jobs", according to a statement released by Mayor Bernero.

In the statement, Mayor Benero notes the proposed expansion is "not a done deal." General Motors stresses there are many considerations that must be resolved before a final decision is made on a new facility.

In a statement released today, the automaker says "GM is developing a business case for a potential future investment at LGR Assembly." The statement goes on to say "an investment would fund facility improvements aimed at strengthening the plant's manufacturing capability. We cannot share details at this time."

GM announced late last year that it was moving production of the next generation of Camaro to Lansing Grand River Assembly from a plant in Canada. A definite date hasn't been released, but it would be within the next few years.

Lansing Grand River assembly currently makes the all-new Cadillac ATS and the CTS family of Cadillac vehicles.
