HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A Michigan couple living in a trash-filled trailer have been released from jail after prosecutors refused to issue a warrant for neglect charges involving their four children -- ages 5, 11, 12 and 15.
Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte says jailers freed the 42-year-old man and 33-year-old woman Monday, several hours after they were arrested at their Hartland Township home, northwest of Detroit.
Deputies answering a neighbor's complaint about 1 a.m. found wine and beer bottles and other garbage filling the trailer's floor and countertops. Authorities say food in the refrigerator was spoiled, fast food boxes covered holes in the wall.
Bugs and a mouse were seen inside the home.
Bezotte says prosecutors believe state child protective services should handle the case. The children are in protective custody.
