LANSING, Mich. -- Former state demographer Ken Darga says he's seeking the Democratic nomination to run against U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers in Michigan.

Darga on Thursday said in a statement that he plans to focus primarily on economic policy in his run for Michigan's 8th Congressional District. Darga says he wants to bring manufacturing back to America. He says his candidacy address concerns of both Democrats and Republicans.

Darga recently retired to run for Congress. He grew up in Oakland County and has lived in Lansing for 35 years.

Rogers has been a U.S. House member since 2001.

Last year, the seventh-term Howell Republican said he wouldn't run for the U.S. Senate, saying the best way for him to make a difference in Washington is staying in the House.
