SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- About 100 people are scrambling for shelter after a fire severely damaged a Detroit-area apartment building for seniors.
No one was injured Saturday, but some residents used ladders to escape the blaze at the three-story Shelby Manor senior complex in Shelby Township. At least four apartments were a total loss. The cause is being investigated.
Residents in pajamas and sleeping caps gathered at a clubhouse. Eighty-three-year-old Sophia Sawicki says she got out of her apartment with her robe but no dentures. Floyd Wessel, who is 73, says it was scary.
Fire department Lt. Rodney Scrutchen described the scene as a "little chaotic." Nearly 30 units on the third floor have fire, smoke or water damage. The second floor has severe water damage.
