DETROIT (AP) -- Mayor Dave Bing has had surgery Saturday to repair a perforation of his intestines and is expected to remain in a Detroit hospital for five to seven days.
Communications Director Bob Warfield says in a release the surgery at Henry Ford Hospital was successful and the 68-year-old Bing "is resting comfortably."
Bing is expected to return to his normal activities within three weeks, but will be allowed to resume limited administrative duties as early as Sunday.
Chief of Staff Kirk Lewis will act as mayor in Bing's absence.
Dr. Scott Dulchavsky, chair of the hospital's surgery department, said he expects a "faster than normal recovery."
Bing's office said he experienced discomfort Thursday after a dental appointment and was admitted to the hospital as a precaution.
