Community Leaders Shield Lansing Students from Protesters

Community leaders, including Mayor Virg Bernero and Interim Lansing School Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Cannul, formed what they called a Wall of Love this morning to shield students from a Kansas hate group.

Four members of the Westboro Baptist Church based in Topeka, Kansas stood across the street from Eastern High School from 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. singing loudly and carrying placards. However, there were no confrontations.

The Westboro group's website says Eastern High School was chosen as a representative of "Doomed America."

The community group of more than 100 people lined the street between the group and the high school. Organizers said they wanted to counter the protesters' message of hate.

The Westboro group left and went to the Michigan State University campus to continue their protest outside the Student Union.
