Benton Harbor Warns of Fines for Snowy Sidewalks

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Snow-covered sidewalks could saddle Benton Harbor residents and business owners with fines.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports Sunday that a Benton Harbor building official was out Friday knocking on doors asking people to shovel their walks.

He also left notices warning those who weren't home or at their shops to clear the snow or face citations.

Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower says the ordinance to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice has been on the books for a while.

Hightower adds that enforcement is being done with compassion because the southwestern Michigan city has seniors who are unable to shovel their walks.

Many cities across the state have seen record snowfall this winter and below-freezing temperatures that have not allowed much of the snow to melt.
