Bath teachers are calling it a "Day On" instead of a day off.

"It helps students understand that the more people who are on your team and the more we use their talents and appreciate that diversity, the better off all of us will be," explained Central Michigan University's Director of the Leadership Institute Dan Gaken. He and his students stopped by Bath Middle School for the day to aid in the unique day.

School has always been in session on MLK Day for as long as teachers can remember. This year's activities including puzzles, trust walks and the "Human Transformer" are teaching students to expand their comfort zones with integrity, inclusion and understanding.

"The students are very engaged. They're interacting with students that we normally may not see them with," said Teacher and Coordinator Sarah Roller. "It's definitely building a stronger school community."

It's a district like many others, with their range of diverse students growing each year. This day is about celebrating the differences. Student Activity Leader Max Tiraboschi described: "Some people don't really understand that even though it might be cool to be mean to someone who has a different culture, if you really get to know them, they could become one of your best friends."

Bath staff members are happy with the empathy they have seen grow in their students in the result of the "Day On," and never plan on making it a day off.
