Babysitter Rescues Kids From Burning Delhi Twp. House

April Kings-Spalink only left baby Josie and 2-year-old Brady a moment to use the bathroom. That's when she heard a strange pop: "Then smoke came billowing in under the bathroom door and through the window. Then ran out of the bathroom, got the kids out of the living room, then went out to the back sliding door."

She hardly remembers thinking; just acting: "Everything just happened so fast. You don't expect it."

Her quick actions have the kids' parents, neighbors and even the firefighters calling her a hero.

"She absolutely did the right thing," said Chief of Delhi Township Fire Department Richard Royston. "First priority is getting out of the house, dialing 911 from a neighbor's house or remote area, and that's exactly what she did."

With what she says, only moments to spare: If I had even stopped for a second to think, we would have been trapped in the house; I don't even want to think about that."

The Koch family will be spending the night with friends as they try to process the loss. Even little Brady is beginning to understand he can't go home: "It got burned."

His clothes, bed and toys are gone. Although he and his sister are going to need some diapers and new clothes, he only says he wants one thing; a toy firetruck.

The house is a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
