As we kick off summer, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has one question for parents today: is there a gun where your child plays?
He and other law enforcement agencies hope that simple question will save lives.
Today is "ask day" - a national initiative from the Center to Prevent Youth Violence.
Parents are urged to use this day to secure guns in their homes.
Authorities say during the summer months children will likely be visiting the homes of neighbors and friends, and parents should know if there are weapons in those homes.
Police say more than one third of homes have guns, many of which are left unlocked, or loaded.
