Gov. Granholm and GOP leaders were unable to resolve the dispute, so lawmakers are now grappling with a possible cut of three percent to Michigan State University, a move that one local lawmaker claims would be "devastating" to the school.

Rep. Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing is working with school officials to convince lawmakers MSU did not violate an earlier agreement to hold tuition increases to the rate of inflation. Earlier this year, the governor said she would rebate money that MSU lost last year if it complied with the rate of inflation request. There's a disagreement over whether the university did that, and a conference committee is trying to resolve the dispute this week.
