Michigan Immigration Bill Similar to Arizona's
A federal judge has put most of Arizona's new immigration law on hold, agreeing with the Obama administration that immigration enforcement, is the role of the federal government. But a similar bill could mean that same for Michigan.

When Arizona's controversial immigration bill was dealt a set back, legislators in Michigan were paying attention. Rep. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, is co-sponsor of a similar bill here and said the Arizona decision will not affect the Michigan proposed law.

"[Arizona] was an activist judge that made a bad decision," Jones said. "Should we stop fighting for our citizens just because one judge made a bad decision? Absolutely not."

But people opposing such an immgration law in Michigan rallied against it.

"We want Michigan to be a friendly state. Open to all kinds of people. We don't want to be chasing away our young people," said Maximo Anguino.

Young people are one of the main reasons Jones says the law is needed.

"Our children are leaving because they can't find work, certainly an illegal immgrant shouldn't be stealing that job," said Jones.

Opponents of the bill favor immigration reform, but in a different way.

"We're talking about allowing immigrants having a chance to earn their documentaion in the United States," said Anguiano.

But earning legal status in the United States is simply not the proper immigration process, and Jones says, it's one that shouldn't change.

"If somebody's here, they need to return home and follow the proper route- the proper procedure," Jones said. "If we don't make everyone follow the proper procedure, it's a slap in the face of the honest immgrants who came here legally."

Jones says the Michigan bill is unlikely to pass, let alone see a judge.

"Under the current governor's influence, our bill wouldn't get a chance," Jones said. "It wouldn't even get a hearing."
