Lansing Police have said for days that Matthew Macon is Lansing's "Serial Killer."

Sunday, Macon's family is speaking out, calling their brother "absolutely innocent."

"We do not feel he is capable of committing such heinous crimes," says cousin and family spokesman Clifton Jackson.

Lansing Police accuse Macon of murdering five Lansing women in five weeks and potentially a sixth in 2004. He has a long history of criminal behavior, including larceny and criminal sexual conduct-- a history, his cousin says, that wrongly influenced the decision to arrest Macon.

"Just because Matthew Macon has a criminal record doesn't mean he's capable of murder," Clifton says.

The family and their lawyer, Mike O'Briant, say they feel Macon has already been convicted in the media.

"I want to request that government officials who have for the past few days been commenting on this case through the press cease their public speculation about this case," O'Briant says.

A major point of contention for the family is the sketch police released of him. They say the picture is of no resemblance to Matthew; his sister, Melissa, stating the nose, complexion and facial hair on the sketch are nothing like her brother's.

A Lansing police spokeswoman says the department is of course sorry for the Macon family's hardships, but they are standing by their decision to release Macon's name and picture to the public to let them know a suspect was in custody.

The Macon family says their thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, but that Matthew Macon is not the person who took their lives.

No there have not beeen any muders but there have been a couple of violent attacks, these all can be linked to the person that is terrozing our city, same mo, but we want him to be the one so bad so we can sleep our hypocritical sleep.

Give me the switch and I will push it, get rid of people like him. We need to spend our money and time on better things. If his family wants him alive let them pay for his prison costs, why should us as tax payers support him anymore. If we had and used the death sentence maybe idiots like him would think twice before doing the crime in the first place.

I just had to ask one question of Paul, Did you really call this man an outstanding citizen? Where I come from an outstanding citizen doesn't have a criminal record including larceny and criminal sexual conduct. Sorry pal, but I think you might be confused.

Five Lansing killed women in five weeks. But none since he's been captured. Someone do the math for me. It seems my Justice Calculator is broken.

Black or white, was he incarcerated during the other incidents? It wouldn't be the first time the police messed up and jumped the gun?! Does the poster match his likeness?! just because you have a track record doesn't mean you can do the shot-put, can anyone figure that out, look at the big picture.

Rest assured brothers & Sisters, innocent or guilty(assuredly) we'll get him off, through extortion!

If the police have so much information why have they not charged him? Why have they not given details of the crime, why are they still arresting people for this crime (betcha did not know that) shut up, pray, and hope a fate never befalls you like this, judge not lest ye be judged, ignorant woman!

It's true he has a passed crimminal record, however where is the evidence to me it seems that macon was a easy target because of his passed and lpd is just tring to calm the community nerves, personaly before accusing they should get there facts right what if the killer is still out there and just laying low I don't believe every thing I hear on the news, because half of the time there just tring to get there ratings up so let's hope that if he is the murderer he gets what's coming to him, if not I hope and pray they find the murderer.

I haven't heard what evidence the police have against Macon. I do hope, for the sake of getting a killer off the street, they do have the right person! I also hope the police haven't jumped the gun and really do have strong evidence against him!

The rape conviction against Matthew Macon had nothing to with with small children, he is not a molester, furthermore that case was when Matthew was fifteen and still ajuvenille himself and should not have been released! That in itself is illegal, but the city of lansing wants to sleep at night! But someone better wake-up, becasue the timelines do not fit! Matthew was incarcerated during alot of the alledged cases they are trying to tie him to! When this is all said and done it just may be his tainted criminal history that keeps him from going to prison for what I see turning into one of the biggest cover-ups this city has ever seen. I hope my comments are posted, but if they are not me and others like myself will make it our business to get our voices heard.

While I sympathize with all the family members of the deceased persons. I want justice! Justice says innocent until proven guilty! This city is so scared that there is a serial killer on the loose that Matthew Macon (innocent until guilty) with his long criminal history is a great fall man, unless there is substancial physical eveidence, which has yet to be seen, I stand by this man as I would any even if it were my family member I would not want someone to go wrongly punished because I am grieving. I will watch this trial closer and if there is not suffiecient evidence given by the end of this week, I will personally be calling the naacp, and al sharpton and anyone else that can help to make sure that this crime is punished but by the right guilty party, and my heart says we the city have the wrong guy!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? Why is it that the race card is still being played in 2007? This man is a despicable monster regardless of race, religion, or gender. The members of law enforcement obviously have enough evidence to convict this heinous creature, but why do you believe that they should share every piece of evidence with you before the trial, do you honestly believe that they arrested him based on a drawing or that they would deliberately mislead the community by announcing that they had the serial killer when they weren't quite sure...come on people!! Can anyone say DEATH PENALTY? My heart goes out to "AJ" and all of the other families who have lost a loved one.

Posted by: Lisa Location: Lansing on Sep 4, 2007 at 10:05 AM
what do the Police have to say about the sketch not looking anything like who they arrested ?

Posted by: Julius Location: Lansing on Sep 4, 2007 at 12:58 AM
I trust that our Prosecutor knows what he is doing and the suspect would not be in jail without some substantial proof. The sketch wasn't a good likeness but the sketch is not what will convict him. As for his family, it's good that they stand by him but don't ask us to disregard physical proof authorities have found. Since the attacker was only killing white women it raises questions of racism by those who insist he is innocent despite the evidence. Truth and reason will prevail, as it should. Shame on anyone who tries to make it something else.

Why does everything have to be about race? All I see him as is the monster who killed my mother. Why is his family rallying around him now, he was in foster care most of his life. He has raped young girls, robbed people. But I'm sure if my brother or son killed your mother it would be a different story then. All these woman where someone's mother, daughter, grandmother's. You explain to my children who never got to meet their grandmother, why you are standing up for the one that viciously killed and raped their grandmother, and why they will never get to meet her. Your family member is an animal. There is concrete evidence and proof he killed all those women. But I do believe in innocent until proven guilty. BUT THEY WILL PROVE HE IS THE GUILTY ONE!!! See you at the trial.

Posted by: paul Location: lansing on Sep 3, 2007 at 06:58 PM
this is just another true attack on an outstanding citizen of lansing. trying to bring him down and hold him back. lets not forget his role model examples that he has already served time for. Oh yes it upsets me that we continue to assume before we prove. lester stone where are you and why have you not stepped up to the plate.

Posted by: paul Location: lansing on Sep 3, 2007 at 02:18 PM
dont worry mr macon im sure al sharpton and jessie jackson are on there way to help the cause

Posted by: Paul Location: Lansing on Sep 3, 2007 at 02:14 PM
cry me a river another black person that didnt do it and is such a role model to our city. lets not even think about the rape conviction and theft oh yes he is a saint

Posted by: Jennifer Location: Eaton Rapids on Sep 3, 2007 at 09:43 AM
I am the cousin of one of the victims. And while I can not say 100% whether this man is guilty or not, my gut says he's not the guy who killed my cousin. I am waiting for some DNA or other hard evidence, other than his record. His record alone is/should not be enough to convict him, not even in public opinion. Until I see something more, I will still feel unsafe in Lansing.

Posted by: william Location: lansing on Sep 3, 2007 at 07:52 AM
How about a lie detector test? or the good old back up of a truth serum injection? If he is lying, the truth would come out. or is it guilty until innocent now a days? I agree, a criminal record does not help him, but being falsely accused is or could put the wrong person in jail
