A maximum-security single-person cell at the Ingham County Jail is accused serial killer Matthew Macon's new home for now.
He was moved into the maximum-security area Friday after charges against him grew from failing to register as a sex offender to murder.
He's accused of killing five Lansing women in five weeks, and potentially a sixth woman in 2004.
Macon spends 23 hours a day in the cell now. He's checked on by deputies every hour, but watched all the time.
"He is being housed in a cell with cameras that are watching him 24 hours a day," says Sgt. Scott Phillips.
Like all other inmates, Macon is allowed out of his cell for once a day for one hour at a time. But wherever he goes, he has two people with him at all times.
"He's chained everytime he's moved," Phillips says, "and unchained when he gets back to his cell."
Like all other maximum-security inmates, Macon eats alone as guards watch on and showers in a locked room with guards standing outside. Watching TV is out of the question.
Macon's case is likely the most high profile of any inmate currently at the jail. That's no matter, says Phillips.
"He's not treated any differently than anyone else in the jail."
Macon will remain at the Ingham County Jail throughout all the legal processes ahead of him, which will likely start Tuesday, when he's expected to be arraigned on murder charges for Sandra Eichorn's death.
