Bush Stumps in Michigan

Stumping in Michigan, President Bush is voicing sympathy with the state's economic woes, but he says conditions are improving.

In an outdoor rally on a ball field in Traverse City, the president said he knows in some parts of Michigan, “The recovery's lagged.”

But he says he sees “good signs” on the economic horizon. And he says John Kerry's platform of scrapping some tax cuts is just what the economy doesn't need.

Both Bush and Kerry have been campaigning hard in Michigan. Recent polls give the Democrat a narrow lead.

But Traverse City in northern Michigan is in a heavily Republican area. Bush is the first sitting president to visit since President Ford rode in the National Cherry Festival parade in 1975.
