Adopted children who move to Michigan will more easily retain their Medicaid benefits, the state announced Wednesday.

Marianne Udow, director of the Family Independence Agency, says Michigan has joined an interstate compact with 44 states.

The compact allows eligible adopted children to retain their Medicaid benefits when adoptive families move from state to state or when a child from one state is adopted by a family in another state.

Udow says in the past, adopted children had to qualify under Michigan's Medicaid eligibility criteria when they moved to the state. Now, they don't have to worry about losing their assistance.
