Detroit Takes Control of School Leadership

It'll be up to Detroit residents to decide who leads its public schools. The Legislature has approved a bill to let voters choose between having newly-elected school board with full authority, or giving the mayor a role in choosing the school CEO.

Governor Granholm endorses the measure approved in late-night sessions in both chambers.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says he wants voters to give him more control over the schools.

Under his plan, the mayor would appoint the district's chief executive and the board would have to approve it.

The mayor would also have the authority to fire the chief executive even if the board disagrees.
