Seasonale is the only FDA-approved birth control pill that allows women to only get their period every three months. Nurse Practitioner Marianne Flynn of Dewitt Women's Health says it is safe, but it may come with a few more side effects than the conventional BCP.

She says women may have more spotting, or breakthrough bleeding, with Seasonale but this may be subside after a few cycles. Otherwise, Seasonale offers the same benefits as a 28-day birth control pill.

Flynn says even though women only get four periods a year with Seasonale, they are not any different or more intense than a regular period.
