"I'll try anything once."

That was the response of many of the passersby in downtown Lansing today as PETA representatives handed out free soy-based veggie burgers.

Governor Granholm may have given up on the exclusive meatout tomorrow and swapped it for Agricultural Day but it didn't stop the PETA ladies in lettuce bikinis from encouraging people to go green and go vegan.

"With so many vegan options available, it's never been easier," said Kristina Addington, the Mid-Michigan PETA coordinator.

PETA, the animal rights organization set up shop in Washington Square to give out the free burgers.

"By cutting meat out of your diet you can save over 100 animals a year. You can reduce your risk of heart disease and obesity and you can help the environment at the same time," said Addington.

They fashioned the bikinis to help entice people to make the switch from meat.

"The lettuce lady costumes are a fun way to talk about a very serious issue and they also show off the slender vegan physique."

"We know they're healthier -- less cholesterol, less fat," said Jim Johnson.

But the lettuce ladies not only showcased their physique.

"We gave away 50 veggie burgers - a fantastic response. A lot of people have told us that they're already vegan and everyone seems to be in support of meatout day," said Addington.

Veggie burgers may not appeal to everyone but Evan Braedon has been eating them for year and has been meat-free for close to 10 years.

"I started off giving up meat and I started feeling better right away so I just kept doing it," said Braedon. "For myself I feel better, I feel like I'm helping the environment. I'm helping the animals, it's win-win."

The meatless alternative is a big hit for some.

"It's tasty," said Braedon. "Give it a try."
