It means hundreds of new jobs for the Jackson area and more money coming into the community but not everyone is excited about the grand opening of Jackson's new Wal-Mart Supercenter. The chain, on W. Michigan Ave., open Wednesday morning.
Patricia Gorney lives across the street from the store. She owns three houses and is afraid the noise, traffic and lights will scare away renters. A traffic study commissioned by Wal-Mart in 2002 estimates an additional 1,000 vehicles will travel through the area throughout the day once Wal-Mart opens its doors. Brown St. resident Jackie Johnson thinks traffic will be a mess for awhile.
Some changes have been made to help ease traffic headaches caused by the new business. Two turn lanes have been added on Brown St. for motorists and delivery trucks.
