Saturday was supposed to be a big day in Jenny Woodruff's household.
"It was a birthday party for my grandkids," she tells News 10. "We were grilling out for the kids, we had New York steaks. We were trying to have a good time."
That good time came to a screeching halt, Woodruff says, when she opened up some Great Value canned asparagus tips from the Wal-Mart in Jackson, and found what she calls a "critter"-- for lack of a better term.
"I wanted to barf," she says. "I don't know what it is, but it was not normal.
"It looked like part of a bird or part of a chicken. It was little, with black fins on the back of it, and a black mark like feathers were plucked," Woodruff says.
She says she called Wal-Mart immediately and they told her to bring back the can and the critter-- which she says she did. The manager at Wal-Mart does confirm that Woodruff returned her can of asparagus-- with the little critter inside it-- but told us if we wanted further comment, we'd have to call corporate.
So we did, and Wal-Mart spokesman Bill Wertz tells us they regret that Woodruff had this experience. He says they've reached out to the supplier to find out how the object got in the can. Also, Wertz says they're sending both the can and the object to a third-party lab for testing, and they're instructing stores to remove the product from the shelf.
For skeptics, Woodruff maintains that she didn't put the thing in herself; she's more concerned that there could be more canned critters out there.
"A kid could have eaten that," she says. "There may be someone out there not paying attention."
In the meantime, she says she'll opt for fresh asparagus instead.
As of 2:30 p.m., we were still able to buy Great Value canned asparagus at that Wal-Mart, though an email from Wal-Mart says it may take some time for stores to get it off the shelves. Also, they're only removing asparagus from the same lot and code number.
As for Woodruff, she's received a $10 gift card for her troubles and $1.25 refund for the canned veggies; she says that's not enough. She says a lawsuit could be a possibility.
