Police have spent the day behind closed door trying to finish piecing together what happened on Mitchell Street in Jackson. The Sherrif's Office still has to re-interview Officer Darin McIntosh and submit its ballistics report to the county prosecutor.
Jackson County Undersheriff Tom Finco said the State Crime Lab has already confirmed that Blackman Township Public Safety Officer Darin McIntosh fatally shot and killed 63 year old suspect Elvin Potts. Potts reportedly fired his .357 four times and McIntosh returned fire twice.
"[The crime lab] will take bullets from the wall and package them up and save them for analysis," said Finco.
It's been confirmed that Officer James Bonneau was shot in the upper arm. He was wearing his bullet resistent vest but the bullet hit right outside.
"It went through and through into his chest area above the vest line and traveled downward into his body," said Finco.
The gun that Potts used to kill Officer Bonneau was not registered withe state of Michigan. Potts was a convicted felon so its believed that the gun may have been stolen.
The city is in mourning and its not only trying to finish its investigation but also deal with the high level of emotions.
"Everybody is upset but you have to do your job," said Finco. And Jackson Police Chief Matthew Hines added, "My focus has been with James' family and with the department to make sure the officers are getting the counseling they need, the support they need to get us through this tragic incident."
The Sheriff's Office has covered for city police for the past 24 hours and will do so again on Friday while the department copes with its loss and honors its fallen officer.
Officer Darin McIntosh is expected to make a full recover but will remain in the hospital for a few more days. His fellow officers have been taking turns staying with him at the hospital.
