We start in Leslie, where Dr. Jeffrey DeWeerd at Allegiance Family Medicine is seeing an increase in patients with ringworm.
Symptoms include: a circular rash on the skin that's red and inflamed around the edge and healthy looking in the middle, slightly raised expanding rings of red scaly skin on your trunk or face, and a round flat patch of itchy skin.
See your doctor if you have a rash that doesn't improve within two weeks.
You may need prescription medication.
If there is excessive redness, swelling, drainage or fever, see your doctor immediately.
Dr. Thomas Stout at Mount Hope Community Medical Center in Lansing says pink eye is going around.
Symptoms include: redness, itchiness, a gritty feeling, discharge that forms a crust during the night, and tearing.
Children may have a low-grade fever.
To treat pink eye, cleanse the eyes and prevent it from spreading by avoiding contact with the eye area.
Apply a warm compress for 5 to 10 minutes, three to four times a day.
Get plenty of rest.
You may want to take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever control.
See a doctor if crusty, gunky discharge comes out of the eye.
If you have a young infant with recurrent pink eye, or persistent eye tearing, your child may have a blocked tear duct.
This is a situation that should be closely monitored.
