A multi-state, streamlined sales and use tax agreement could mean tens of millions of dollars for Michigan.

The new bill signed Monday by Governor Granholm will help in collecting sales tax from purchases made online or by catalog.

The agreement is a voluntary system, but state lawmakers say it’s the first step in moving towards a fair and uniform way of collecting sales tax.

The legislation takes effect on September 1. The state estimates this will bring in $10 million in the first year.
