Forty-six-year-old Ronald Scott Culver was pronounced dead Saturday at Foote Hospital after a fatal skydiving accident at the Napoleon Skydiving Center. Culver was an experienced skydiver with about 1,100 jumps.
Culver's parachute did open, but authorities said the accident may have been caused by a turning maneuver that went wrong. Mike Pelzer, owner of the skydiving center, said at about 200 feet from the ground the canopy collapsed, re-inflated, and then spiraled to the ground.
Napoleon Police say they do not think the accident was caused by faulty equipment. The Napoleon Skydiving Center is accredited by the United States Parachuting Association. Pelzer says statistically skydiving is safer than driving a car.
Funeral services for Culver will be held Wednesday, June 30, at 12 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing.
