The Michigan State Senate passes a cigarette tax 20-15.

The tax, if approved by the house and governor, would provide the state with $295 million in revenue for next year's budget.

A spokesperson for Rep. Rick Johnson, the house speaker, says Johnson may let the bill go to conference committee, meaning the tax proposal may take a different form if it is eventually approved.

The house could vote on the issue as early as Wednesday.
