Shayla Crockett and her team of census recruiters are going door to door to find employees. They're pounding the pavement starting Monday in order to find people to apply for US Census Bureau jobs in Lansing.
Crockett says, "There are certain neighborhoods in Lansing that we're targeting. We're letting everyone know that we are still hiring, looking for people in these areas and we're putting fliers on their door."
Partnership Specialist Dichondra Johnson-Geiger says, "We do need more people and that's why we're going door to door." Johnson-Geiger says they still need to hire about 200 people in an area that stretches from North Grand River Avenue south to Mount Hope.
The target area where they really need applicants surrounds downtown and the capitol like a doughnut. It's a spot that traditionally has been hard to count, so they need more applicants than in other areas.
Dichondra Johnson-Geiger says, "What we're asking people to do is make sure they get tested." There is some urgency in getting the fliers out to potential new applicants quickly. That's because there's only about two weeks left in the application process for the census.
Dichondra Johnson-Geiger says, "They need to call right away, 1-866-861-2010 and be tested for the census test."
Shayla Crockett says, "We're only going to be doing this for the next couple of weeks and once that window of opportunity closes, it's over. So, we're trying to hopefully get those people who have not already taken the test to get excited about it and go ahead and call the number."
Crockett and her team will drop off fliers to about 200 homes on Monday alone. They hope their efforts result in a couple hundred new employees for the census in just two weeks.
