New Sparty Logo: Yay Or Nay?

The beloved image of Sparty that's spotted on just about every Spartan piece of apparel is about to become outdated.

MSU is unveiling a new Sparty logo, one that's decidedly controversial with the Spartan Nation. At the Student Book Store Friday, we break the news to the Spartan faithful; for most, it's a no-go on the logo.

"It looks fierce, angry," says Heidi Greenhoe of Howell. We ask her isn't a spartan supposed to be fierce?

"Yes," she says, "but they're nice people too!"

"This almost looks like a mutant, like an alien," Kim Ward says of the new logo.

"The new Sparty is more modern, sleek," says Jamie Ianni of Okemos. "The kids will love that, I think."

SBS assistant manager Mike Wylie is taking the Sparty switcheroo in stride, even though it likely means a complete overhaul of their products-- from puzzles to purses to santa caps to straw hats.

"No one is going to have you take something immediately off the shelf," Wylie says. "We've dealt with this before over the past 20 years."

We called the university Friday to find out what the cost would be and what the plan is to replace everything that has the old Sparty logo on it; spokesman Terry Denbow tells us it is "entirely too early" to start discussing that.

MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis confirms a new logo will be just one element in a "comprehensive brand." But whether that means changing every piece of stationery, and at what cost, the school won't divulge.

"I personally don't really care for it at this moment. The [old one] is so iconic," says Debbie Powell.

The new branding is set to be unveiled this spring, and we're supposed to learn more in April.

Go back to the original Sparty - the "gruff" one that I grew up with on my t-shirts. I never cared for the logo that replaced "Gruff", but at least it's better than the new one that was proposed this year. Whoever is responsible for this "new" Spartan logo....Hello?! What were you thinking???

I think the new logo is perfect. Michigan State has always been known as a party school and i think a lot of people carry that mentality in our actions, even sports. We're semi under achievers, mostly in the sports department (football especially). The new logo is fierce and angry as one student said in an interview and I think that is great. I want our sports teams to been seen as angry when they hit the competition. I wanna seem fierce in class and in the job force. Fierce is a good thing. It just gives sparty a little bit of edge. Its like the old mean mug sparty with a 2010 update. But it does somewhat look like it would fit the trojans better. Thats my only knock

That seriously has to be one of the ugliest renderings of a Spartan I have ever seen. NAY, NAY, NAY to the change. I hope they take fans' opinions into account, because it's obvious this is going to irritate A LOT of people. Ugh! That is seriously ugly!

I wonder how much money MSU spent to have someone design this? There is nothing wrong with the Sparty logo, please leave it alone. I beleive MSU should have to make public what it cost for this redesign. I know several years ago IU hired an independent design firm to give them a new logo, and it cost in excess of $100K. This is not how MSU should be spending money in these economic times. With people being laid off at MSU, this certainly doesn't say much for MSU's fiscal integrity. Start calling the President's office and complain of fiscal irresponsibility by the Adminstration.

New Logo sucks, let's keep some spartan pride and the tradtional logo. It's not even close, the traditional logo is part of so many fans lives, we grew up with this and it is part of our childhood. Don't mess with that!!!

KEEP the old one. The new one looks like a 5 year old designed it. MSU should use the money to keep tuition down instead of spending it on a new logo.

Just one more example of change we don't need. I haven't seen one post for it, will the MSU administration change their tune. Where are the Coaches on this, I bet their looking at the new revenue they think they will get from the MSU faithful. I say boycott the change and send a message. What a farce.
