A mother battling cancer kills her Down Syndrome daughter then turns the shotgun on herself. That is according to the Clinton County Sheriff's Department.

It appears Glee Bengel, 61, feared she would die and no one would be around to take care of her daughter April, 24, who had Down Syndrome.

Someone setting an animal trap found Glee Tuesday night. She was lying in the backyard, a shotgun near her. Investigators found April in her own bedroom shot multiple times. They lived in Essex Township which is near St. Johns.

Family members declined to comment saying Glee wanted no pictures released, no statements made, just privacy.

As a mother of a 7 year old with Down syndrome, I am so deeply saddened that this mom has become so desperate and hopeless for her daughter's future that she had to go to such extremes. Maybe it's time for some changes to prevent such heiness acts in the future. What can each of us do to help others in need, whether the need be current or future?

I write through my tears. Tears for an innocent daughter and her loving mother who took desperate measures. If you don't know a person with Down Syndrome - they are beautiful, funny, and loving, an angel sent to earth, a gift from God. I know, because I have a 29 year old daughter with Down Syndrome. I understand the fear and desperation of a mother who feels that no one would care for her precious child the way she does. As I grow older my concern for my daughter's future also grows. Carrie is very lucky to have 2 younger brothers who love her and will either care for her or oversee her care after I am gone. Despite the measures taken by Glee, I pray that she along with April were welcomed into Heaven with open arms.
