While they are performing legal gay marriages in Massachusetts, efforts are underway in Michigan to ban the practice here. A statewide petition drive has been launched as supporters hope to place the question on the November ballot.
Meanwhile, two gay couples were on the capitol steps today claiming the ban is not needed because homosexual marriages are already outlawed in this state. Chris Swope says the campaign pushing the amendment will divide the state. He appeared with his partner Brad saying they are a family, and they fear more discrimination if the ban is imposed.
Backers of the proposal need about 400,000 signatures to win the ballot spot.
