A ten-year-old girl is dead after a loaded .50-caliber muzzle loader rifle goes off when she's left home alone with her brother. It happened Tuesday, just after 12:30 p.m. in Pittsford Township in southern Hillsdale County.
Hillsdale County Sheriff's Department says Katie Craft and her 12-year-old brother were home alone and not in school because their family is in the process of moving to a new house. Their father, John Craft, was moving belongings to their new home in Somerset about eight miles away.
Police say Katie's brother ran to a neighbor's house for help after the gun went off. The neighbor called 911, but police say the girl died instantly from the gun shot. They also say her brother was handling the gun at the time of the accident.
Police say the results of their investigation will be turned over to the county prosecutor, who will then decide if charges should be brought in this case.
