Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope says the treasurer confirmed Wednesday morning that Tina Houghton has paid the back-taxes owed on her and her husband's home on Coulson Court in South Lansing. There were two years of taxes involved in the controversy that has dogged the councilwoman since the election. The Houghton's owed the city of Lansing in 2009 property taxes with penalty. The charges for the city totaled more than $1,390.00. The Houghton's also owed the county for 2008 property taxes. In total, she owed the city and Ingham county more than $3,000 in property taxes. Although the taxes are paid, some council members say more questions must be asked. Carol Wood says she plans to work with other council members to discuss if anything should be done about the issue. The Lansing City Charter requires that those who run for office not be in default with the city. Houghton has said in previous interviews that she and her husband are raising four children, and got in over their heads.
