The polling places for 20,500 city of Lansing voters will change by the August election.

The changes passed by the city council Monday trim the number of polling places from 43 to 34.

City Clerk Chris Swope says the deal could save the city about $10,000 starting in 2008. It would also allow the city to be "a little more selective" about picking poll workers, he says.

The city will mail all affected residents new voter identification cards. Swope says if his budget permits, he'll send additional reminder postcards.

There are no May elections for Lansing residents. City residents living in other school districts will go to polling places in those districts as planned.
